Now that a coveted role has opened to anyone with the strength to claim it, he and his partner, Patroclus Fotos, plan to compete and double their odds of winning. Achilles Kallis may have been born with nothing, but as a child he vowed he would claw his way into the poisonous city’s inner circle. In Olympus, you either have the power to rule…or you are ruled. Here’s how the publisher describes the story. Wicked Beauty is the third installment in the series (with a fourth already set for release next year) and ranks as perhaps the most fascinating reimagining yet, giving us the hot Achilles/Patroclus/Helen of Troy throuple we never knew we needed and spinning out a much different-and far sexier-tale than Homer ever imagined. Where Robert’s Neon Gods set the story of Hades and Persephone in the world of politics, second novel Electric Idol reimagined the love story of Eros and Psyche as a marriage of convenience between a hitman and a social media influencer. Katee Robert’s bestselling Dark Olympus series has won legions of fans globally for its smart, savvy storytelling, complex reimaginings of familiar figures from Greek mythology, fresh takes on familiar romantic tropes, and, yes, sizzling sex scenes. In temperatures cold enough to coagulate jet fuel, 41 people were living and working in perpetual exterior darkness under a polar dome designed to house a staff of 17. And the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station hardly provided the best of circumstances. Under the best of circumstances, women with her type and stage of breast cancer have a 50/50 chance of survival. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the world, Nielsen’s odds didn’t look particularly good. Her ex-husband, with whom she had gone through a bitter divorce, told reporters that Nielsen was a bad mother who had abandoned her children and was probably making up the whole thing to get attention. Nielsen’s family and friends were soon fielding a barrage of interview requests back in the United States. Despite Nielsen’s request that publicity be avoided, her employer, a subcontractor to the National Science Foundation, was overwhelmed by media interest in the “South Pole doctor.” Although NSF didn’t release her name, reporters quickly filled in the blanks from information that was released. In this dramatic historical and psychological epic, Alexander Waugh traces the triumphs and vicissitudes of a family held together by a fanatical love of music yet torn apart by money, madness, conflicts of loyalty, and the cataclysmic upheaval of two world wars. Three of his sons committed suicide Paul, the fourth, became a world-famous concert pianist, using only his left hand and playing compositions commissioned from Ravel and Prokofiev while Ludwig, the youngest, is now regarded as one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. He bought factories and paintings and palaces, but the domineering and overbearing influence he exerted over his eight children resulted in a generation of siblings fraught by inner antagonisms and nervous tension. Karl Wittgenstein, who ran away from home as a wayward and rebellious youth, returned to his native Vienna to make a fortune in the iron and steel industries. The Wittgenstein family was one of the richest, most talented, and most eccentric in European history. From Alexander Waugh, the author of the acclaimed memoir Fathers and Sons, comes a grand saga of a brilliant and tragic Viennese family. The action ranges from the familiar environs of America to the ancient, divided city of Jerusalem. As the story begins, Leeds and his “aspects” are drawn into the search for the missing Balubal Razon, inventor of a camera whose astonishing properties could alter our understanding of human history and change the very structure of society. Stephen Leeds, AKA “Legion,” is a man whose unique mental condition allows him to generate a multitude of personae: hallucinatory entities with a wide variety of personal characteristics and a vast array of highly specialized skills. In Legion, a distinctly contemporary novella filled with suspense, humor, and an endless flow of invention, Sanderson reveals a startling new facet of his singular narrative talent. His ambitious, multi-volume epics ( Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive) and his stellar continuation of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series have earned both critical acclaim and a substantial popular following. Brandon Sanderson is one of the most significant fantasists to enter the field in a good many years. Jubilee is a narrative non-fiction story for readers ages 8-12. **All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The book was just released and is available to order! Hooray! It's Multicultural Children's Book Day on Friday, January 28th! I'm delighted to be participating as a reviewer for a second year! Capstone Publishing sent a digital copy of Jubilee: The First Therapy Horse and an Olympic Dream written by KT Johnston and illustrated by Annabella Ortiz. Thank you to Vivian, the judges, prize donors, and fellow writers! To be acknowledged in this way is very humbling. I am beyond grateful to be part of this beautiful, encouraging writing community. I hope that working with Vivian to realize my own big dreams of becoming a published author will honor Paula's memory. I watched a video of Paula opening her author copies of her new book and felt a connection with her. The coincidence gave me goosebumps and brought more tears. Her publication date also happens to be the same date as Benjamin's birthday, which I discovered after I chose this mentorship. Paula Cohen Martin passed away before the publication date of her debut picture book, BIG DREAMS, SMALL FISH. I chose the Paula Cohen Martin Big Dreams Mentorship with Vivian Kirkfield. The eleven lovely judges read 749 entries, chose their favorites, and my entry earned the #1 spot! I cried when I read the news and pinched myself for days after! I had the privilege to choose my prize first out of the 57 wonderful donations. Arc Welding: The Atlanta Radio Theater Company version mentions that the cult of the Magna Mater is associated with The Great Old Ones of the larger Cthulhu Mythos. The complete story can be read online here. Then the cats start acting weird, the narrator starts having troubling dreams and the newly renovated ancestral home may be overrun by an army of nocturnal rats. Helped by a friend of his son's, who just happens to be the nephew of the man currently in possession of the land, he discovers generations of mistrust and suspicion aided by local traditions of horrible, nasty deeds attributed to the land and his ancestors specifically. After his son dies from injuries sustained during the Great War a man named Delapore leaves New England, with his nine cats, to purchase and restore the hereditary lands of his ancestors, the De la Poer family, in England. It represents a rare Lovecraft story that does not contain any overt supernatural elements, other than the mention of ancient worship and the imaginings of an increasingly unreliable narrator. Lovecraft, written in August-September 1923, and published in Weird Tales in March 1924. The Rats in the Walls is a short story by H. Read More Women is Electric Lit’s biweekly series, presented in collaboration with MCD Books, in which prominent writers-of any gender-list their favorite or most formative books by women and nonbinary authors. The main character is female because, as the list below shows, Sloan just really loves oddball adventure stories by and about women. Sourdough is nominally about making bread, but it’s also a magical-realist romp about technology, startup culture, and dealing with forces beyond your control. Robin Sloan’s latest novel Sourdough, newly out in paperback, has a female main character and is about baking-but don’t let that fool you into thinking he believes women belong in the kitchen. This fourth installment picks up where Taken at Dusk leaves off, and jumping right back into the world of Shadow Falls was a bit jarring. It took me over a week to get through this one, and most of that time was spent simply trying to remember what happened in the previous book. I finally finished reading Whispers at Moonrise last night. Even those of you who have read the previous books might want to skim over the last chapter or so of the third book before reading book four. The fourth book, Whispers at Moonrise, picks up immediately after book three, and it is not a stand-alone book. Hunter’s Shadow Falls series ( Born at Midnight, Awake at Dawn, and Taken at Dusk) before reading further. Spoilers! If you haven’t already, read the first three books in C.C. |
